Angers and Saumur

Wines for kings in Plantagenet times, these nectars from Maine-et-Loire have continued to establish their excellent pedigree. At the heart of Val de Loire, today ranked 3rd French wine producing region, the area containing the Anjou and Saumur vineyards is the most extensive. With its 30 "appellations d’origine contrôlée" (labels guaranteeing origins), this wine-producing area is a reflection of the availability of a wide choice of colours as well as tastes - dry or sweet whites, dry or mellow rosés, reds with character and fine sparkling wines. These wines, grown on shale or tufa, seem to delight in pleasing the taste buds of people ranging from knowledgeable wine experts through to enthusiastic amateurs.

Exploring the Anjou and Saumur vineyards is a classic tour that nobody should miss. The best place to start is either at the Maison du vin d’Angers or the Maison du vin de Saumur. Close to the tourist information centre in each town, these two specialist firms, managed by InterLoire, introduce the area's vineyards and appellations and have an annual selection on offer for visitors to taste and buy. A wealth of information is available for novices as well as knowledgeable amateurs. More info...
