CITY BREAKS: Excursions and guided tours

In the three main cities of Anjou, a little tourist train, or a horse-drawn cab will take the weight off your feet as you explore the city. You can also go on foot accompanied by a guide who will point out places of interest. All three will introduce you to little gems, some recent, some with long and interesting stories behind them giving an insight into Anjou identity.
Tourist offices in Angers, Cholet and Saumur arrange both unusual and historical guided tours.

Angers, a city of art and history where medieval half-timbered buildings compete with grander monuments. One of the most imposing is the medieval castle that stands, rock-like at the entrance to the city and behind whose massive towers the masterpiece of the Apocalypse Tapestry is displayed.

Cholet, famous for crafts and textiles not only in the past but today too. A major city for French fashion whose celebrated red handkerchiefs are a reminder, if one was needed in this historical centre, of the sad history of the wars of the Vendée.

Saumur, whose château looks out over an idyllic Loire as it crosses the city, is home to the famous Cadre Noir (a troop of elite horsemen), and delightful sparkling wines. The city provides opportunities for getting out and about at a steady clip, clop, literally going with the flow, or just wandering down a maze of lanes that provide evidence of their medieval history. Each bend revealing a monument, a heritage site, a winery: enough to prompt a few exclamations.

If you are looking for something unusual, a guided tour of the vineyards, guided walks to see the wild life along the rivers’ edges or want suggestion for tours of delightful villages, ask at the local Tourist Office. The staff can also tell you about local crafts and factories to visit as well as events taking place.
